68Woodbridge, Co. Kent. Horn at Woodbridge on tho

70Arrived in India in August 1.826, and having, in anti-

71cipation of his arrival, been posted, in tho preceding

72May, to the 14» tb N. I., ho proceeded to Lucknow and

73joined that regiment there towards tho end of the year.

74In January 1829 ho accompanied tho 1 V ]l to Delhi, and

75at that station from tho middle of May to tho end of

76November 1830 he officiated as Interpreter and Quarter-

77Master to the corps. Tn the autumn of that year ho

78inarched with the regiment to Ludhiana ; in October .

791831 ho accompanied it to Rupar, and he was present in

80tho assemblage «thc re on the occasion of tho meeting of

81the Goveriior-Goneral, Lord William Bentinck, and tho

82Ruler of the P,unjab, Maharaja Ranjit Singh. On the

83termination of this affair he returned with the regi-

84ment to Ludhiana, whence, in December 1834, he

85accompanied the left wing to Shahjahanpur. In Feb-

86ruary 1S'55 ho was appointed, in tho Political Dept.,

87to bo a British Agent for the Navigation of tho

88Indus, and in the execution of tho duties o£ this appoint-

89ment he was stationed at Mithankot until the spring of

91(afterwards Sir Alexander) Burnes, who was thon

92en rmi'e to Kabul on tho Mission which, unhappily, led

93np to the first Afghan War; and ho remained at that

94place until March 1838, when he joined th© camp of

95Ranjit Singh, and travelled with tho Maharaja through

96various parti of the Sikh dominions, eventually pro-

97ceoding to Ludhiana in tho following May. Ho wan

98then nominated for employment in connection with the

99projected expedition to Afghanistan for the restoration

100of Shah Shuja-ul-Mulk to the throne of Kabul, and

101during the months of June and July 1838 he was

102actively employed, under Mr. (afterwards Sir William

103Hay) Macnaghten and Major (aftorwards Sir Claude

104Marline) Wade, in the negotiations (with Ranjit

105Singh at Adinanagar and Lahore, and wijh Shah Shuja

107Tripartite Treaty. Later on ho was employed in im-

108proving the road from Ferozeporo to Rahawalpur and

109in collecting supplies at the latter place for the Army

110of the Indus, and for a brinf space ho was with that

112Sindh ; but he afterwards proceeded to Peshawar and

113joined tho force (composed almost entirely of irregulars)

114under Major Wade, which had been detailed to move

115through the Khaibar Pass and, escorting the Shahzada

116Tal«:iur, advance on Kabul from tho east. Though his

117functions with this forco were entirely of a political

118nature, he received tho command of one of tho irregular

119levies of which it was composed, and at tho head of it ho

120teok a prominent part in tho forcing of tho Khaibar

121Pass and the captnro of AH Masjid in July lS3i>, as

122well as in the subsequent ad vance on Kabul, where ho

124tember, nearly a mouth after Sir John Keane and the

125main body of tho Army of the Ted-us had reached that

126place through Sindh and Baluchistan. In October and

127Novombor 1839 ho accompanied Sir John §Keane and

128the returning portion of tho Army of the Indus on tho

129march to Peshawar, to which place he had been posted,

130as Political Agent, on tho V 1 September preceding, ai d

131he had scarcely arrived thero when, about the 22' 1

132November, it fell to him to accompauy a detachment

133sent to escort a convoy of provisions to Ali Masjid,

134the movement resulting in a sharp conflict with the

135Afridi tribesmen. In the important situation of Polit-

136ical Agent at Peshawar he continued for three years,

137until the I eiani nation of the Afghan War, and it was

138during this period that, being temporarily attached for

139the occasion to tho force under tho command of Bri-

140gadier Rhelton, ho took part in the operations of Feb-

141ruary 1811 against the Sangu Kind Shinwaris, in tho

142Nazi an Valley. Poshawar being thon the point through

143which we maintained our military communication*!

144with Northern Afghanistan, in the circumstances of the

145time tho position of Political Agent thero was a peculi-

146arly trying one : tho hostility of tho Khaibar tribes on

147the one hand, and on tho other tho disturbed, not to say

148anarchic, condition of the Punjab after tho death of Ranjit

149Singh, tho weakness of tho " Government " (such as it

150was) of his successors, and tho turbulent and mutinous

151conduct of tho Sikh soldiery, all tended to make the

152position of a British political officer one of great diffi-

153culty ; and the difficulties of the situation were not

154lessened by the talc of our disasters at Kabul and by

155tho defeat of the earlier attoinpts made to relievo the
