202. This circle is comparatively stagnant. Population and wells in use

3have fallen off, but there has been an

4u iu sangar. increase in cultivation of 6 per cent.,

5and a considerable extension of canal irrigation, and prices have risen by over

625 per cent. The recorded chahi area is 11,589 acres. The actual average

7area annually irrigated in the thirteen years 1895-08, was 7,108 acres, and in

8the three years 1905-08 of which two were very dry years, 7,827 acres. The

9financial Commissioner took 7,200 acres as the assessable area. The, recorded

10Aaliri area was 2,270 acres : the actual cropped nahri area of the three years,

111905-08, averaged 2,045 acres. Two thousand acres were assumed as the

12assessable area. The following rates were taken for the half-net-assets based

50The revised kind rent estimate was Rs. 55,405; but, as it was based on low out¬

51turns and prices, and on a low estimate of canal irrigation, the half-net-assets

52were placed at Rs. 62,000. The old assessment was Its. 49,875. The following

84assessment imposed amounted to Rs. 55,315, an increase of 11 per cent, on the

85old demand. No addition was made to the fixed assessment of canal land in

86this circle, as the amount involved was considered too small to he taken into

87account.

88The Khadar of the Indri pargana is the worst tract of the kind along

89this part of the Jumna, being inferior

90both to the Khadar of Pipli and Jagadhri

91to the north, and to that of Karnal and Panipat to the south. Its soil is

92throughout inferior, being either the lightest of sand or the stillest of clay.

93The Jumna floods do a good deal of harm, and the lands they moisten are little

94more productive than those dependent on rain. Percolation from the canal

95still swamps considerable areas, though it improves the productive power of

96others. The tract ha 3 long been in a stagnant condition, while its neighbours
