6 The Sikhs on leaving Mukhowal, were sur¬
7 rounded by the enemy, and the greater part of
8 them killed; those that escaped fled to the Punjab.
9 With Govind Singh, only forty men remained ; and
10 enraged as he then was, he ordered them to depart
11 likewise; but they refused, and replied, that “ they

17 the same time, to forgive the Sikhs who had aban¬
18 doned him, and tear up the letter which they had
19 addressed to him
20 Admiring their fidelity, Govind,
21 at length, yielded to their request, and destroyed
22 the letter in their presence.
