5 The territory of the Punjab at this time extended Tbe sikh tw-

8 ing the standards of the Sikhs, hence named the
9 Nishanwala* Missul,—included the country about
10 Umballa in its possessions.
11 In giving a short outline of these Missals, how¬
12 ever, we shall confine our remarks to those across
13 the Sutlej, since the Missuls on this side the river
14 have long ago merged into the protected Sikh’s
15 states, and the details of them more properly belong
16 to a history of the British power in India, than to
17 one devoted to the Sikhs of the Punjab.
