4 Gharra, forming one of the rivers of the Punjiiud,
5 and receives the Ravee, Chenab, and Je.lum, before
6 it joins the Indus. At the present day the Bdtlej
7 flows near the fort of Phiflour, which is built on
8 its right hank, -and was meant as a place of defence
9 hr case of an invasion.
10 in -former times the river .ran near the present
11 city of Loodianah; its bed is well defined, and a
12 smai: nullah, which now marks its old course, is
13 lost in the sands about Ghauspore, while the high
14 ground near Bhoondree points out its left; bank.
15 The Sutlej frequently changes its bed between
16 Loodianah and Feerozpore; and theeity of Tehara,
17 which now stands at some distance from the left
18 bank, is said to have once occupied a place on the
19 right, while the river at the present day flows- over
20 a former city of the same name.
21 The water of the Sutlej is very cold, indicating
22 at once its source and its long course. It abounds
23 in fish ; and its banks, in many places, are covered
24 with thick jungle, the abode of the tiger and other
25 wild animals.
26 The next river is the Beas, the Hyphasis of the
27 Greeks. It is known also by the following names,,
28 viz.: — Beascha, Beypasha, Bihasis or Bipasis,
29 Beand, arid Beah.
30 This river rises on the southern ridge of the
31 Ititanka Pass in Lahoul; from this it passes Mun-
32 dee and Naclan, enters the plain of the Punjab, and
