3 The first Gooroo, or teacher, among the Sikhs
4 was Nanuk (Bedee,) and the last was Govind Singh
5 (Sodee;) Before proceeding, however, with the
6 history of Nanuk, it may he necessary to explain
7 the, meaning of the terms Bedee and Sodee, as
8 applied to the Gooroos.
9 It is related that-in former times the Rajah
10 Ram Chunder, son of Kussruth, divorced his
11 wile Seeta, and gave injunctions to his younger
12 brother, Luchnrun, to carry her twelve miles into
13 the jungle, and then desert her. Luchimm so far
14 obeyed this order that he carried her into the
15 country of the Punjab, and there left her at the
16 spot where the Hindoo place ol worship now
17 exists called Ram Teeruth, about six miles 1 iom

19 Seeta was here delivered of two sons, one oi
20 whom she named Loll, and the other Kussoo.
21 When arrived at manhood, these became wealthy
22 men, and each built a city to. which he gave his
23 own name; that of the elder being Lahore, andj*w«nd
24 the younger Kussoor, both of which, remain at
25 the present day; the former being the capital of
26 the Punjab, and the latter exhibiting traces of an
27 extensive city, about twelve miles from Feerozpore.
28 The descendants of Loh and Kussoo continued
29 to possess Lahore and Kussoor; but after a long
30 series of years, when Kulrao was king of Lahore,
31 and Kulput was king of Kussoor, the latter raised a
32 large army, and made war on the former, whom
33 he vanquished, and took possession of Lahore,
