2 The author of the following pages cannot suffer
3 his work to go forth without offering at least an
4 explanation of, if not an apology for, the manner
5 in which the second volume has been prepared.
6 It will be at once apparent to the reader that
7 all the information contained in the two volumes
8 has been prepared either in the country described
9 or in its immediate vicinity ; the major part of the
10 contents of the second volume being actually
11 collected in the very midst of the battle of one of
12 the most memorable campaigns on record. It
13 was the purpose of the author to have given to
14 all his materials the condensed form peculiar to
15 political history; but the rapidity with which
16 startling events succeeded each other,—the great
