5 Nanuk, affected by their situation, said to his
6 companion, “My father has sent me to deal in salt
7 with a view to profit; but the gain of this world
8 is unstable and profitless ; my wish is to relieve
9 these poor men, and to obtain that gain which is
10 permanent and eternal.'’ His companion (Bala
11 Sandhu) replied, 4 Ihy resolution is good : do not
12 delay its execution.” Nanuk immediately distri¬
13 buted his money to the hungry fukeers,, who, after
14 they had gained strength from the refreshment
15 which it obtained for them, entered into a long
16 discourse with him on the unity of God, with
17 which he was much delighted. His father did
18 •not at all approve of this mode of laying out his
19 .money, and though his sister, Nanukee, inter™
20 ceded, Nanuk, no doubt, was punished. His
21 father used his utmost endeavours to turn the at¬
22 tention of his son to worldly matters, and with
23 this view built a shop for him at Sultanpore, in
24 the Bist Jalindhur, and furnished it with various
25 articles of merchandise; but, instead of turning
26 them to any account, he bestowed the whole on
27 fukeers. T ailing in his object, by this means, his
28 father insist ed on liis marrying * thinking, no doubt,,
29 that this step would cause him to renounce his
30 | wandering life, He was accordingly married at
31 but he speedily left his home and went
32 to the jungle in search of fukeers; and wherever
33 he heard of them, there he proceeded. Nanuk
34 had now publicly become one of them; and his
35 natuuii talents, though still a boy, soon won for
