4 Ram I.; but the word of thy sect shall be Guru, and
5 1 will forgive the crimes of thy disciples. The
6 place of worship of the Bairagis is called Ram Sala;
7 that of the Yogis, Asan ; that of the Sanyasis, Matj
8 but that of thy tribe shall be Deerma Sala. Thou
9 must teach unto thy followers three lessons; the first,
10 to worship my name; the second, chai'ity; the third,
11 ablution. They must not abandon the world, and
12 they must do ill to no being; for into every feeing
13 have I infused breath; and whatever I am, thou
14 art, for between us there is no difference. It is a
15 blessing that thou .art sent into the Kali-yug.’
16 After this, ■* Jf'a! Guru,’ or 5 Well done! Teacher !,'
17 was pronounced from the mouth of the Most High
18 Guru, or teacher, (God,) and Nanuk came to giVe
19 light and freedom to the universe.'’ (Malcolm.)'
20 The above passage, as Malcolm justly observed,
21 “gives a sufficient view of the ideas which the
22 Sikhs entertain of the divine origin of their faith.”
23 Nanuk believed in metempsychosis, and..that
24 realty good men would enjoy paradise while those
25 who had no claim to the name of good, but yet
26 were not bad, would undergo another probation,
27 by Revisiting the world in the human form ; and
28 that the bad would animate the bodies of animals,
29 particularly dogs and cats: but it appears from the
30 Punjabee authors, that Nanuk was acquainted with
31 the Mahomedan doctrine regarding the fall of man
32 and a future state, and that he represented it to
