11 your doing so, or abide by the consequences.”
12 Teghbuhadur remained silent for some time, but
13 at length spoke as follows : “ The king requires no
14 explanation from fukeers, and I am only one to
15 offer up my prayers for his majesty; besides this J
16 have nothing else to say, but offer up my prayers
17 in adversity.” .Ram Rao ori hearing this was
18 greatly enraged, and told Teghbuhadur, that un¬
19 less he gave some explanation of his conduct, he
20 should not be liberated. At length the Gooroo
21 gave this answer, “ Since you wish it, I will give
22 the explanation required. I will put a written , I 1 ”ff c " ipue
23 paper round my deck, which you cannot cut with
24 a sword.” Having said this, and written on a piece
25 of paper, he tied it round his neck, and then re¬
26 quested the emperor to order some one to cut it!
27 The blow was made, and the head of the Gooroo .iai«..'
28 lolled on the floor! The paper was then read and
29 contained these words :—
30 “ Sir dya aur Sirr ne dyad'*
31 ^Literally, ‘ I gave my head, but Hot my secret!’ The wort) « Sip” sig-
32 nifying. fcad ; and with an addition .1 r, a secret. The ingenuity of the
33 remark is lost in the translarion.
