2 in the night. Several showers fell during the
3 month 1 remained in the valley, hut at the
4 same time dense clouds to the westward,
5 and the information of travellers, established
6 the fall of heavy rain in Kashmir. The crops
7 cultivated are Sherokh harley, wheat, and
8 buck-wheat; the first ripening in about three
9 months, the second in five or six, and the last
10 in six weeks or two months. The cattle are
11 horses, cows, the hybrid between the yak
12 and cow, and sheep and goats. The former,
13 though small, are hardy, active, and tolerably
14 well shaped : the price of a good five-year
15 old gelding is eight or nine pounds sterling.
16 The neat cattle are generally black, small,
17 short horned, and well shaped, with rather a
18 larger dewlap than is consistent with Eu¬
19 ropean notions of beauty. I could not ascer¬
20 tain the quantity of milk given by a cow, but
21 I understood it to he tolerably large: the
22 price of a cow in full milk after her second
23 calf was to me two pounds, but this was more
24 than the average price. The zho-mo, or
25 female progeny of the yak and cow, was
26 more valued for the dairy than the latter, and
27 sold for a larger sum. In general the cattle
