6 Spoii’um Serpenlis, Suj)er) has been formerly used in Europe
7 as Ep^rpinm or topical irritant upon the wrist, in ague. It is
8 said, a decoction of 'it has cured deafness. The natives of the
9 Punjab occasionally use the cast shins of serpents i. veterinary
10 medicine, as in chronic eruptions. As 1 obtained in my collec¬
11 tion of serpents a fresh slough of the. most, poisonous kind,
12 I determined to make experiment upon this substance, a id
13 the results were most, satisfactory, so that T for several years
14 used it. as a remedy, and do not hesitate to recommend it to the
15 medical 'faculty as one of the most energetic medicines, certainly
16 deserving extensive use. The slough in question was from
17 the As-pidocfimwn. See Vol. 11. Tab. fil, fig. I. The prepara¬
18 tion was that followed with other animal substances; i e. I
19 cut with a pair of scissors as much as necessary' verr hue,
20 moistened it with proof spirit, and Maturated it in the usual
21 manner with sugar; I then dissolved the whole in spirit, cither
22 to keep it as an essence, or to make the paste for lozenges
23 with it ; both plans were useful. If old cast skips of other
24 Serpents (which abound in the Punjab but are exposed to
25 the climate—wind, rain, sunshine, etc.) their origin being un¬
26 known, are as good as fresh, 1 have not tried, hut doubt.
