2 valley of Cashmeite. The herb was formerly used in hysterics,
3 uterine hnemorrhage and wounds; its seeds are stated to expel
4 intestinal worms.

8 coloring substance, but was never used as a medicine.

10 Smi lax aspjeba —is said to somewhat resemble Sarsaparilla in
11 its properties; its infusion has lately been recommended in
12 incipient elephantiasis. The fresh juice of its berries is given
13 in hooping-cough, producing however at the commencement
14 nausea and vomiting.
15 Smilax China. Chinee nodosa 1 , radix— is an important
16 article in Eastern medicine. See Vol. I. p. 160. The powder
17 of it produced by the attacks of worms is also much used by the
18 Hakims, lq Europe China-root is but seldom administered.
