4 used for the purpose . producing intoxication, prin¬
5 cipally by the fnqueers, who smoke it through tile
6 hooka. Besides the hemp-ulftnt, two other valuable
7 productions of the country, saffron (Crocus sat.) and
8 the putchuk-root (Cost is niyr. Cashm.) have also been
9 monopolized by the government. Notwithstanding this
10 fact, and the proximity of the country, il is/ a ted
11 in the Berigal Dispensatory, p. 692, “ Putchuk-rb f is
12 brought from Lahore, where it is called knot, it is of
13 unknown origin; it is ehioriy exported to China, where
14 it is used as incense,” See. (!)
15 Twenty years ago, when I was still ignorant of
16 what drugs were to be obtained in the Bazaar at Lahore,
17 1 sent to an apothecary in Calcutta, for Siry chum J/tha
18 St. Iguatii, and surcus s'p'uc-} instead of the first, i ro
19 received {fy-yc/aw nux vomica, which belongs to the
20 family of the Sln/rhnos ! and instead of the latter
21 (the tint of the cuttle-fish) I received < itHh-fsh shells.
22 although, as the reader may he aware, the latter
23 have a different color and a different effect. A il

25 ever, he procured in any quantity at the. Lahore Bazaar.
