15 gained a notoriety hi Hindustan — principally among the Mahoroe-
16 dans. (See Veil, I. p. \ii.) Some are of opinion, that these
17 pills contain mefeury; hut from an analysis (performed at
18 the University chemical laboratory a Vienna) it appeared
19 that no mercury existed in their composition. Judging from
20 the smell, taste and color, t believe them to contain some
21 acrid medicine (as Croton-oil, Eiatarium or Eupborhiuui
22 mixed with aloe, myrrh and afl’ron (Set Turbith.) At-
23 Lahore, l r.iadr several experiments with these (ills; and found,
24 that when given in full loses they-', proved a drastic purgative
25 which, administered at hazard, sometimes proved useful, but
26 more frequently injurious. In a prepared state-, i. in diluted
27 simdl doses, tfiev lmd, like everything else, their peculiar pro¬

32 employ the decoction of barley (barley-water) as a refreshing
33 bev crage, useful in ardent fe\ ers. Converting barley into malt, to
