5 on returning from the obsequies of his father, was
6 killed by a stone falling on his head from one of
7 the gateways of Lahore, while passing under it in
8 his howdah. Oodum Singh, the eldest son of
9 Rajah Goolab Singh, of Jummoo, who was on the
10 same elephant, shared the same fate. Dhyan Singh
11 ordered his nephew’s body to be burned, while that
12 of Nonehal Singh was carried to the palace, and a
13 Wasconcealed report industriously circulated, that though badly
14 for a time.

28 the advice and suggestion of Azeezoodeen, Goor-
29 mukh Singh, Bhaee Ram Singh, and other influen-
30 tial persons.

32 Lahore from Mukherya, where he resided, and on
33 his arrival it was deemed no longer necessary to
34 conceal the death of Nonehal Singh, whose body was
35 accordingly burned with the usual honours. The
36 mother of Nonehal Singh, Chand Koonwur, per-
37 ceived the object of Dhyan Singh in sending for Shere
38 Singh, and she was determined to frustrate it.
39 Among the most powerful Sirdars in the Punjab,
40 was the Scindinwala, and Chund Koonwur deter-
41 mined to ask his aid in her endeavour to expel
42 Shere Singh from Lahore, and keep the govern-
43 ment in her own hands. The chief Sirdar of the
44 Scindinwala family, at this juncture, was Uttur
45 Singh, who was then absent at Hurdwar, and to
46 him she sent a message to return to the capital
