26 supposition that he himself was engaged in the affair,
27 and still further to mask his design, Dhyan Singh
28 went to Jummoo, leaving his brother Goolab Singh
29 and his son Heera Singh with the Ranee. Before
30 leaving Lahore, he wrote to Shere Singh, requesting
31 him to hurry to Lahore, where he would meet
32 with support, adding that he himself would soon
33 return to his post. Shere Singh, at the same time,
34 received the assurance of the Sirdars and soldiers,
35 that he would be kindly received on his reaching
36 the capital.
37 On his way to Jummoo, the Rajah met: his
38 brother Soochet Singh, to whom he communicated
39 his design of placing Shere Singh on the throne of
40 Lahore, and obtained his ready co-operation. Shere
41 Singh lost no time in making his preparations, and
42 dispatched a letter to the British Agent, informing
43 him of his intentions, adding, that whatever aid
44 might be afforded him would-be rewarded by a
45 grant of all the Sikh Possessions on the left bank of
46 the Sutlej. He, likewise, sent a letter by the hands
47 of his trusty adherent, Mukhee Khan, to the Rajah
48 Dhyan Singh, advising him of his intention to reach
49 Lahore without delay, and requesting the Rajah to
50 join him there. Mounting his horse, he left Muk-
51 herya in the morning, and after halting half-way
52 for the night, he reached the vicinity of Lahore
