9 his two sons; his eldest, Oadum Singh, having been
10 killed at the same time with Nonehal Singh by the
11 falling of a stone from one of the gateways of
12 Lahore. The Rajah of Jummoo vowed bitter re-
13 venge on those who had been concerned in the
14 death of his son and nephew, and prepared to make
15 war on the Sikhs, who, on their part, sent an army
16 Goolab Singh to Jummoo to reduce the Rajah to allegiance ; and

19 money, and showed marked attention to those sent
20 to receive the tribute, but they were way-laid by his

22 them. After such a glaring insult to the Govern-
23 ment of Lahore, we can hardly account for Goolab
24 Singh’s subsequent conduct in coming to the capital,
25 on any other supposition than the thirst of revenge

30 that, if this was not his sole motive, it swayed his
