2 MM.— Misher, bring five bags of rupees of
3 a hundred each, and lay them at the sayud’s
4 feet.
5 S.—Your Highness will, I hope, give me a
6 sight of yourself to-morrow.
7 (Sayud makes his salaam and retires.)
8 A.— Your Highness, there is a holy man who
9 has one of Gooroo Nanac’s shoes.
10 M .—W hat, has he preserved it since that time ?
11 Bring hither that holy man, and take my own
12 elephant for him to come on.
13 (The holy man arrives ; unfolds the shoe from a
14 hundred wrappers ; the Maharajah salutes it, and
15 applies it to his eyes, head, and breast.)
16 M.—Order a perpetual grant to be written of
17 a thousand rupee village, in the province of Va-
18 zeerabad, and give it to the holy man.
19 A.—Your Highness, there is a great pundit
20 (scholar) arrived from Benares, deeply read, who
21 has a lingum of Mahadeo’s with him; he says
22 that whatever pain your Highness may have will
23 be cured by applying it; it must, therefore, be a
24 real one.
25 M.—Misher, saddle an elephant with a silver
26 howdah, and bring the pundit on it directly.
27 A.— Maharajah, the pundit is a man of queer
28 temper, and will not be thus brought.
29 M.—Bring him by all means, and take 500
30 rupees with you from the treasury.
