2 father’s suttee, the elephant upon which Noo
3 Nehal Singh was seated, in passing through the
4 gates of the palace, pushed against the brick
5 work, when the whole came down, killing the
6 Rajah Dhyan Singh’s nephew, who was seated
7 upon the same elephant, upon the spot, and
8 fracturing the skull of Noo Nehal Singh so dread-
9 fully that he never spoke afterwards, and expired
10 in a few hours. The incident is generally sup-
11 posed to have been premeditated, and not the
12 effect of accident, as stated by the Government ;
13 but the whole affair was so enveloped in mystery,
14 that even to the present day it has been found
15 impossible to attach suspicion to any party, and
16 the matter has now long since ceased to occupy
17 men’s thoughts.
