2 Jowahir Singh, after he had thus got rid of the
3 prince, was to send troops against Goolab Singh,
4 the uncle of the late Heera Singh, who had re-
5 turned to the fortress of Jummoo. To this step
6 Jowahir Singh was led partly by his dread of the
7 powers of Goolab, and partly by the urgent ne-
8 cessity for keeping the troops in employment,
9 those refractory coadjutors having become still
10 more troublesome since the British government
11 had deemed it necessary for purposes of security
12 to augment their own force upon the frontier.
13 Goolab Singh, to strengthen his hands, offered
14 large bribes to the troops of the minister to join
15 him, which they did in considerable numbers,
16 notwithstanding that he had treacherously reco-
17 vered the amount of largesses paid to their dele-
18 gates by causing them to be interrupted, mur-
19 dered, and robbed. With this accession of force,
20 Goolab Singh left Jummoo, defeated or brought
21 over those who were sent to oppose him, and
22 marched straight to Lahore. The consternation
23 caused by his presence induced the authorities
24 at the capital to temporise, and after a little nego-
25 ciation he was admitted to the court, and swore
26 fealty and friendship to the young Maharajah,
27 and the persons about him. It was for some time
28 supposed that he would displace the Wauzeer
