2 rebellion, but nothing effectual was done by the
3 Lahore government whose difficulties hourly in-
4 creased. Two attempts had been made upon the
5 life of Goolab Singh, intrigues and jealousies
6 arose among the different Sirdars; the soldiery
7 were clamorous to be sent against the English,
8 and the minister, abandoned to every description
9 of debauchery, exhibited a deplorable incapacity
10 to meet the crisis that was arising. Consulting
11 his personal safety, Goolab Singh obtained leave
12 of absence to proceed to Jummoo. Meanwhile
13 Peshora Singh’s’ rebellion made head, and the
14 Ranee finding resistance hopeless, made terms
15 with and invited him to Lahore. On his ap-
16 proach to the capital, the Wuzeer Jowahir Singh
17 fled with another Rajah, Lall Singh, but returned
18 soon after at the intercession of the Dewan.—
19 Peshora Singh never reached Lahore. By whom
20 contrived, or in what way accomplished, has not
21 yet been satisfactorily determined, but it seems
22 that the prince was murdered, and the soldiery
23 conceived the idea that Jowahir Singh was the
24 instigator of the assassination. Be this as it may,
25 the clamor of the troops reached a fearful height,
26 they surrounded the capital, demanded the resto-
27 ration of the Prince, and failing that, threatened
28 to depose Dhuleep Singh and elevate the son of
29 the late Shere Singh to the Musnud. The Ranee,
30 powerless to offer open resistance, cajoled the
