2 very considerable reinforcement of twelve guns
3 and 4000 of the Regular or “Aieen” troops, —
4 called Avitabile’s Battalion, entrenching himself
5 strongly in a semicircle, his flanks resting on the
6 river, his position covered with from forty to fifty
7 guns (generally of large calibre)—howitzers and
8 mortars. The reinforcement crossed during the
9 night of the 27th instant, and encamped to the
10 right of the main army.
11 “ Meanwhile his Excellency the Commander-
12 in-chief, with that foresight and judgment which
13 marks the able General, had reinforced me by a
14 considerable addition to my cavalry, some guns,
15 and the 2nd Brigade of my own division, under
16 Brigadier Wheeler, C.B. This reinforcement
17 reached me on the 26th, and I had intended the
18 next morning to move upon the enemy in his
19 entrenchments, but the troops required one day’s
20 rest after the long marches Brigadier Wheeler
21 had made.
22 ‘*T have now the honour to lay before you the
23 operations of my united forces on the morning of
24 the eventful 28th of January, for his Excellency’s
25 information. The body of troops under my com-
26 mand having been increased, it became necessary
27 so to organize and brigade them as to render
28 them manageable in action. The Cavalry, under
29 the command of Brigadier Cureton, and Horse
30 Artillery, under Major Lawrenson, were put
