3 his balls fell short, but quickly reached us.
4 Thus upon him, and capable of better ascertain-
5 ing his position, | was compelled to halt the line,
6 though under fire, for a few moments, until I
7 ascertained that by bringjng up my right and
8 carrying the village of Aliwal I could with great
9 effect precipitate myself upon his left and centre.
10 I therefore quickly brought up Brigadier God-
11 by’s Brigade, and with it and the Ist Brigade
12 under Brigadier Hicks, made a rapid and noble
13 charge, carried the village and two guns of large
14 calibre. The line I ordered to advance—H. M.’s
15 3lst Foot and the native regiments contending
16 for the front, and the battle became general.
17 The enemy had a numerous body of cavalry on
18 the heights to his left, and I ordered Brigadier
19 Cureton to bring up the right brigade of cavalry,
20 who, in the most gallant manner, dashed in
21 among them, and drove them back upon. their
22 infantry. Meanwhile a second gallant charge
23 to my right was made by the light cavalry and
24 the body guard. The Shekawattee Brigade was
25 moved well to the right, in support of Brigadier
26 Cureton. When I observed the enemy’s en-
27 campment, and saw it was full of infantry, I
28 immediately brought upon it Brigadier Godby’s
29 Brigade, by changing front, and taking the
30 enemy’s infantry ‘en reverse. They drove
