2The eastern boundary 1s towaras the north, the very high range separating the

3Beds valley from Spiti, which is the valley of the Spiti river, a tributary of the

4Sutlej. This range running southwards gives off first the. Pérbati river and

5then the Sainj and the Tirthan already mentioned as tributaries of the Beds,

6and then throws out the lateral ridge which bisects the Sardj tahsfl. South of

7this ridge the eastern boundary of Kulu separates the subdivision from the

8Rémpur Bashahr State which hes on both sides of the Sutlej. It runs down a

9spur projecting southwards from the ridges into the valley of the Karnad, a

10small affluent of the Sutlej, and thon follows the Karnad down to its junction

11with the river.

123. Lahul is bounded on the south by the Bira Bangdhal taluga of

13Kangra and by Kulu proper, on the east by Waziri Siti,

14on the north by the Ladakh Province of Cashmere and on

15the west hy Chamba State. To the south and east the boundary is formed by

16the crests of two mountain ranges, which give off southwards the Rdvi and

17Beds rivors and south-castwards the Spiti stream. ‘I'he two ranges culminate

18at their junction ina great snowy peak more than 21,000 feet above the sea,

19and the highest in the subdivision, known by many names, of which the most

20popular is Deo-tibba. On their north sides the two ranges sink abruptly down to

21the left edge of the Chendb, or Chandra, of which Lahul is the cradle. The crest

22of the ridge on the north or right bank of the Chendb, which has an average

23elevation of more than 18,000 feet above the sea, is included in Léhul. It forms

24the water-shed between the Chendb and the Indus, and the northern bound-

25ary of Léhul extends a little to the north of it, so that all the six rivers of the

26Punjab, except the Jhelum, draw some part of their waters direct from the

27Kangra district. To the west the Chendb forces its way into Chamba through a

28very narrow valley, and the boundary on this side is for the most of its length

29formed by the summits of high spurs thrown out from the ranges to the north

30and south of the Chendb valley. Lihul contains an area of 2,255 square miles.

324. Spiti (the s is sileut) is completely hemmed in by lofty mountain

33ranges of an average elevation of 18,000 feet or more

34above the sca, which divide it from Kulu proper and from

35Lahul on the west, from Rimpur Basbabr State on the south, from Great Tibet

36on the east, and froin Ladékh on the-north. It consists of the upper valley of

37the Spiti river which rising from the western Himalaya at an elevation of about

3816,000 feet and at a point not far distant from the source of the Chendb pursues

39a south-casterly course, leaves Spiti by a gorgo cut through the mountain range

40to the east and thereafter flows through Kampur Bashalr State to join the

41Sutlej. The arca of Spiti is 2,155 square miles.

42Boundaries of Spiti.

435. The subdivision is divided into waztris which correspond to the

44Division of Kulu into f@lugéscf Kdngra proper. Léhul and Spiti are each a

45waste or taluyds: their waziri, .Kulu proper, which contains a total area of 1,934,

46boandaries. square miles and forms a strip of country about eighty

47miles in length and varying from twenty to fifty miles in breadth, is divided

48into six waziris, four of which, with Lhul and Spiti, make up the Kulu tahsil,

49while the other two form the Plach tahsil. Waziri Parol occupies the northern

50extremity of Kulu proper, and oxtends from the source of the Beds southwards

51along both banks of that river. On the right bank its southern boundary is

52the Phojalati stream, an affinent of the Beds. South of the Phojalati Waziri

53Lag Sari occupies the whole of the right or west bank of the Beds down to the

54Sarwari,* anothor tributary of the Beds, which forms the northern boundary of

55Waziri Lag Mahéréja, and includes the whole of the remainder of the part of

56Kulu proper lying to the west of the Beds. On the left or east bank’ of the

57river Waziri Pavol extends down to its junction with the Pivbati, and includes

588 portion but not the whole of the northern half of the valley of that stream.

59The remainder of the part of the Kulu tabsfl lying to the east of the Beds forms

60Waziri Rupi, which is separated on the south from the Plach tahsi by the Sainj

61and on the north from Waziri Paro) by the Pérbati up to its junction with the
