2crop. Moth like gram is sown on the newly broken up Barani lands of the Thal

3Cotton has actually lost ground, ‘This is rot a cotton-growing district, and the

4increasing attention paid to other crops has resulted in neglect of cotton. It

5is grown where possible for home consumption. Other Kharif crops are now

6grown in larger quantities in the securer portions of the riverain tract. ‘The

7proportion of fodder crops has increased owing to the largor requirements of

8cattle, The water melons entered in the table do not inelude those raised on

9waste lands in the hal, which have been excluded from registration.

10Taking the crops by harvests the Kharif has somewhat gained at the ex-

11pense of Rabi, as the following figures will show :—

12Last Settlement Average of 5 years

131901-02 to 1905-06.

1615. The prices adopted at last Settlement were based on an average of

17figures obtained from different sources

18for « number of yoars, but the con-

19clusions of both Mr. Thorburn and Mr, Tucker were influenced by a succession

20of years of unusually low prices. he figures sanctioned for adoption in the

21present Settlement by Financial Commissioner's letter No. 5217, dated Ist

22September 1900 for Bhakkar und Leiah, and by Settlement Commissioner’s letter

23No. 3265, dated 25th August 1905 for Mianwali and Isikhel, were discussed in the

50Jaleulating the rise of prices in the manner suggested in paragraph 876 of

51the Settlement Manual, the result is a vise of 57 per cent. in Mianwali, 80 por

52cent. in Isakhel and 43 per cent. in Bhakkar-Leial. It was, however, recognized

53in the assessment reports and the orders passed thereon that this increase was

54exaggerated, and the percontago of increase accepted was 20 in all the four

55tahsils (vide paragraph 92 of Punjab Government Review No. 149, dated 22nd

56November 1907 of the Mianwali-Isakhel Assesement Report and paragraph 5 of

57Mr. Wilson’s Roview No. 2647, dated 25th Septembor 1902 of the Indus Valley

58Asseasment Report). For the purpose of judging the pitch of the new assess.

59ment, it should therefore be assumed that prices have risen 20 per cent. through-

60out the district.

6116. ‘The means of export of the surplus produce of the district have

62been revolutionized since last Sottlement.

63The Sindh-Sagar Railway built in 1886

64and the Mari-Attock branch completed in 1892 traverse the whole district, from

65end to end. At last Settlement all export traffic was carried on mainly by river

66with Sukkar, There was a metalled mail cart road between Bhakkar and Jhang

67which was also used largely for traffic. This road, though still maintained by the

68Communications.
