3Drainage

4of the Bangar,

76 CUAP, IL.—THE PIsTRICT.,

8well defined banks in a very tortuous channel due according to

9the myth to the wrigglings of the snake. The total length of

10its course in this district is 36 miles: Rising as it does in a series

11of swamps and fed at intervals by the drainage of other marshes,

12the water is not of good quality and impregnates the lands

13through which it passes with a saline deposit, and thereby rendera

14large tracts of fine land aggregating 19,721 acres uncultur-

15able falar waste, The water is not much used for irrigation,

16but 735 acres are watered from it by lift and 879 acrea by flow

17mainly on two small cuts—one taking out in Kalananr in *

18Gurdaspur, and one in Rahimabad in Batéla. Dams are put

19up for irrigation or water-mills wherever the people please,

20and the natural drainage of the country is thereby affected and

21swamping results. Proposals are on foot for draining and

22canalising the stream throngh the agency of the Gurdéspur and

23Amritsar District Boards, and if the irrigation'‘and drainage are

24put on asatisfactory basis alargearea may be brovght under

25cultivation with excellent pecuniary and sanitary results,

26The Kasir nala—This rises about six miles to the south of

27Gurdaspur, and running throvgh this district and that of

28Amritsar past Batélaand Tarn 'Téran, enters the Lahore district

29and émpties itself into the old bed of the Beis near Kasér. Ii

30is also knownipv Batila as the old Basti. In this tahsil in does

31considerable damage after heavy rain, and the bed requires to

32be cleared out, 3 |

33The Patti nala.—This rises afew miles atill further to the

34south and ronning past the town of Kadidn and Rangar Nangal

35ends like the Kastir nala in the old bed of* the Beés im the dis-

36trict of Lahore near the town of Patti, It is also known

37as the Lei or Sukheri. ;

38The Udidra nala.—aA fourth line of drainaga known as the

39Udifira nala rises on the confines of this district to the

40north of Aiajitha (in Amritsar), flows across the Amritsar dis-

41des ron entera the lowland of tha Ravi about 43 miles south

42of Lahore.

43By these nalas the Bari Dodébis, as it were, ont up into

44five minor Doibs, and it was this configuration which, as is shown

45hereafter, determined the course adopted for the Bari Doéb

46Canal and its branches, A curious feature of these minor Doaba

47is noted by Lieutenant Dyas, who conducted the original sur-

48veys forthe Bari Doib Canal. Sand is almost invariably to be

49met with crowning the highest part of each ridge between the

50drainage lines, andasin the main Dodb the highest land lies

51close along the Beds or “old Beds,” so generally inthe minor

52‘Doabs between the lines of drainage the highest land is to be

53fonnd, notin the centre but nearer to the drainage on the Beis”

54side of the ridge. Thecrowning lines of sand on the other

55hand have a gradual slope on theside towards the Beds, bat

56end abruptly on the side looking towards the Ravi. |
