1 1.—Journal of Oaptain J. Abbott, Commissioner for the
2 settlement of the Punjaub Boundaries, from the
3 5th to the 19th April 1846.
4 5th April 1846.—Arrived at Rae ke puttun on the right or
5 northern bank of the Beyass. Learn that the Dewan, Adjoodhia
6 Pershaud, and the Bukshee, Goor Narain, are encamped at Undora. I
7 wrote yesterday to advise them of my movements.
8 6th April.—The Lahore Commissioners above named here last
9 night and have just called upon me. They decline any definite answer
10 as to the result of their enquiries regarding the limits of Noorpoor ;
11 but gave me to understand that the investigation is still afoot. They
12 presented me on the part of the Lahore Government with a purse of
13 250 Nanuc Shaee rupees, which I have carried to account of Govern-
14 ment and they sent food for my establishment and escort. Employed
15 this day in collecting information.
16 7th April.— Moved to Badpoor five miles down the Beyass. Assem-
17 bled all the Native Officers and old inhabitants I could collect and took
18 their depositions.
19 Sth April_—I again pressed Adjoodhia Pershaud for a distinct
20 answer as to his views regarding the boundary hereabouts of Noorpoor.
21 In reply he called upon me with a native map of Noorpoor just
22 constructed informing me that he had heard that Purgunnahs Undora
23 and Khirun had at one time belonged to the Kunhiyas, a Sikh
24 principality in the Julundhur. He declined producing as yet any
25 evidence, and allowed that at present the report was a mere rumour.
26 I replied that I had already taken the depositions of all the Native
27 Officers of Purgunnah Khirun and that it was unanimous in
28 contradicting his suggestion that either Khirun or Undora had ever
29 been alienated from Noorpoor; that their evidence was strengthened
30 by that of all the authorities hitherto tangible of neighbouring
31 djstricts, but that I would patiently investigate any evidence he could
