27, Among the annexures is a copy of Brigadier-General

3#Nore.—Will be found printed Nicholson’s report* of the action

4at page 360 of the Selections from at Nujufgurh. It appears that

5a iceetmmeat, 1857- 68, Volume I, while he was engaged with the

6Delhi. Neemuch and Kotah mutineers

7at this place, the Rohilkhund Brigade were only five miles off

8at Palum under Bukhtawur Khan, the rebel General. With

9better information General Nicholson would have marched

10next morning against him ; but the intelligence was defective,

11and the Rohilkhund Force retreated precipitately into Delhy.

12From the accounts of the spies from the city this defeat has

13caused great sensation, and desertions are becoming more fre-

14quent. No more than 600 of the Neemuch and Kotah Force

15appear to have returned. They lost all their guns, ammuni-

16tion, equipage and many of the men who escaped their arms,

178. The firmness and decision displayed by General Nichol-

18son in making the march to Nujufgurh and bringing the insur-

19gents to action at once merit high praise. The Chief Commis-

20sioner is well acquainted with the ground over which the troops

21had to move. At this season of the year it is more or less flooded.

229. The siege train was at Lursowlie yesterday, and will

23probably be in camp on the 4th. Preparations appear to be go-

24ing on for assuming the offensive on the arrival of the heavy

25guns and mortars. The Chief Commissioner has urged on

26General Wilson the expediency of attacking the town, if the

27means at his disposal will justify such an attempt. Many of

28the best officers in camp are sanguine of success.

2910. The news from Agra is satisfactory. A foree had

30gone out on the 25th ultimo and defeated some 3,000 insur-

31gents and killed 300.

3211. The cholera has lately broken out in the small detach-

33ment of Her Majesty’s 24th forming a part of the Moveable

34Column at Umritsur. Out of 200 men 28 have died. At

35the suggestion of the Chief Commissioner the detachment

36will move to Jalundhur,
