180 RECORDS OF THE DELHI RESIDENCY. [ Cuaar:

2Settlement of Government, will be ascertained. The rights of the husband-

3Teriione man and the dues of Government will be defined and

4Instructions secured. The capability and resources of the country will be

5Metcalfe, investigated and made known, abuses will be removed, wrongs

6will be redressed, order and regularity will be introduced,

7confidence will be established. In promoting the attainment of

8these important objects, you will no doubt be involved in much

9troublesome detail, and embarrassing investigation. But the

10end is so interesting that I am persuaded you will not regret

11the personal trouble with which your exertions may be

12attended.

1325. To yourself or to Mr. Fraser the accomplishment

14of the objects in question would probably be attended with

15Jess difficulty than to any other. Either of you would enter

16upon the undertaking with great and peculiar advantages.

17From the attention to business and from the ardent zeai to

18grant redress, which you have both evinced in the discharge of

19the Judicial Branch of your duties, and from the good which

20you have already operated by that attention, you must, ere

21now, have gained the attachment of many and secured the

22confidence of all. The community therefore will naturally and

23justly be prepared to consider your deputation as an era of

24relief and redress, and in this I am persuaded it will not be

25disappointed.

26P. S.—Should any part of this letter appear to you to be

27obscure, I request that you will point it out in order that

28it may be forthwith explained.
