1Ii.J LUDHIANA AGENOY RECORDS, 1810-11. 181

283. From A. Ssroy, Esquire, Resident at Dehli, to Ineutenant-

3Oolonel D. Ocurertonr, Oommanding at Ludhianeh,—

4dated the 12th February 1810.

5I nave the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your

6dispatch of the 29th ultimo, on the subject of the attack made

7upon Lieutenant White. I have also received your letter of

8the following date, enclosing your dispatch No. 49 ! to Gov-

9ernment on the same interesting, though distressing, subject.

102. It would no doubt be extremely desirable to avail

11ourselves, as suggested by you, of the exertions of the

12friendly Sikh Chiefs for the purpose of effecting the seizure

13and punishment of Bhola Sing, the ringleader of the banditti,

14if, upon such an occasion, their zealous co-operation could

15be depended upon. I fear, however, that, partly from the

16inefficiency of their troops and partly from the character

17of sanctity attached by them to that sanguinary robber, as an

18Ukaulee, their unaided exertions would be inadequate to

19the attainment of the object.

208. In supposing Bhola Sing to be an Ukaulee I am

21not guided by mere report. I have even reason to believe

22that he is one of those bloodthirsty fanatics who made

23the unprovoked attack at Umritser upon the Mission to

24Lahore last year during the celebration of the ceremonies

25of the Mohurrum ; for, on referring to the Umritser news-

26paper of the 25th February 1809, I find the name of

27Bhola Sing mentioned as the ringleader of that ferocious band.

28According to the information of Rajah Jeswant Sing he was

29formerly in the service of Rajah Runjeet Sing, and was

30dismissed on account of his tumultuous and disobedient

31conduct, since when he has resided at Dumdummebh Jee,

32a refractory town in the country of Rajah Sahib Sing. Ina

33letter which I lately addressed to Humeer Sing, the Vackeel

34at this place on the part of Rajah Sahib Sing of Putteealah,

35I expressed my astonishment, concern and disappointment

36both at the Rajah’s not having originally provided for

37Lieutenant White’s personal security, and at his not having

382 §2 supra,

39Measures for

40obtaining

41redress for

42the attack

43on Lieuten-

44ant White,

45Surveyor.
