2 was a ruddy nut-brown. A peculiar feature about him was that he wore
3 small gold earrings, in token of bondage to the great saint Sheikh Salem,
4 Chishti, to whose prayers, his parents believed, they owed his birth, and
5 after whom they had also named him Salem.
6 With the death of her husband and the capture of Shahir Yar, her — wir Janina widow.
7 son-in-law, whom she tried to raise to the throne, the influence of Nur
8 Jahan expired. After the latter event she retired into privacy, and lived she fixes her resi-
9 at Ldhore for twenty years, with her daughter, Prince Shahir Ydr's widow, ‘nce at Lahore.
10 A pension of twenty-five lakhs of rupees per annum was allowed her
11 out of the public treasury. She wore the plain white dress of a Moghal
12 widow, secluded alike from amusement and business, and gave herself up
13 to study and retirement, cherishing the memory of her husband. She died
14 at Léhore at the age of seventy-two, on 29th Shawal, 1055 (1646 A.D.), and — Her death, 1646.
15 was buried in an elegant, sepulchre-like baradaré (summer-house), which
16 she had herself built near her husband’s mausoleum.
17 Jahangir struck various coins in Hindostdn, Kébul and Kandahar. -The , The coins of
18 following couplet is seen on several rupees coined at Ldhore in the 14th °°"
19 year of his reign :—

22 . , “Yhrough the splendour of the name of King Jahangir, the son of King Akber, may the
23 coin of Lihore be ever brilliant! 1018, 14th year.”
24 According to T'uzak-i-Jahdéngtri, when the emperor ascended the throne,
25 the amir-ul-omerah, in commemoration of the event, presented him with
26 the following couplet. Rupees were coined in Ldhore, Kdshmir and Kan-
27 dahar with the following inscription :-—

31 “The King Ntr-ud-din Jahéngir, the son of King Akber, has rendered the appearance of
32 gold as brilliant as that of the sun and the moon. Struck at Lahore in the year 15.’
33 Several rupees bear the following inscription :—

36 ‘' There is no god but God, and Muhammad is the Prophet of God. Nur-ud-din Muham-
37 raad Badi Shah.”
38 The Zuzak informs us that Asif Khan was ordered to have the follow-
39 ing couplet inscribed on gold coin :—
