16 i his will, Jahéugir had declared Prince Shahir Yar successor to the throne,
17 Asif Khan and the soldiery at once declared for Shah Jahan, who
18 was then in the Dekkan. Asuf Khan, in concert with Iradat Khan, Khan-7-
19 Azim, resorted to the ‘stratagem of proclaiming Déwar Bakhsh (also called, Dawar Bakhsh pro-
20 Mirza Bolaki), son of Khusrow, of unlucky memory, in order, on the one hand, ~~ sca a
21 to prevent disturbances, and, on the other, to defeat Nur Jahan’s arrangements
22 . and secure Shah Jahdn’s succession. Accordingly, Daéwar Baksh having been
23 seated on horseback, the royal canopy was raised on his head and the khutba
24 read in his name near Bhimbar. The royal retinue, with the puppet sover-
25 eign, then moved to Lahore.
26 Meanwhile, Prince Shahir Yar had crossed the Jhelum, with a body of horse,
27 to secure Léhore. On reaching Léhore, he was urged by his intriguing wife
28 to assume the royal title. He seized the royal treasury and everything be- | Shshir Yér atthe
29 longing to the State which was in Léhore,and was joined there by Sultans ‘royal titles at Lahore.

31 On the other side, Asif Khan, with the mock king, Déwar Bakhsh, advanc- the forces of the twa
32 ed. The opposing forces met about three kos from Léhore; but the raw Pres mect at Léhore,
33 troops of Shahir Yar broke and fled, almost without striking a blow. He had
34 taken no part in the engagement himself, but had retired, with a body of
35 2,000 cavalry, to the vicinity of L&hore, to await the course of events. Hear-
36 ing of the rout, he shut himself up in the fortress of Léhore, which was
37 invested the following day by the armies of Asif Khan and Azim Khan.
38 Azim Khan effected his entry into the fort at night, and the next morning
39 all the other Omerahs followed him. Shahir Yar, deserted by his friends, bid The defeat of Shabir

46 his name in all the mosques. Ddawar Bakhsh, whom the supporters of Shah
47 Jahan had set up as a matter of policy, was now placed in confinement, and,
