2 cultivation are found in the districts of Lahore, Ambdla, Gurgaon,
3 Rawalpindi and Dera Ghdzi Khai. The chief sugar-producing districts
4 are Sialkot, Gurdasp&r, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur and Ambala. Indigo is
5 almost entirely confined to the districts of Multan, Mozaffargarh and Dera
6 Ghazi Khén. Ambdla, Shahpur and Kangra have the largest poppy culti-
7 vation. Tea is grown in the hill tracts of Simla and Kangra.
8 Since 1882-83 the Agri-Horticultural Gardens of the Province have come
9 under the direct management of the Government, and a Committee, presided
10 over by the Commissioner of Settlements and Agriculture, has been es-
11 tablished, the functions of which are to distribute plants and seeds, to conduct
12 experiments on behalf of Government, to train skilled gardeners and to
13 maintain the gardeas at the head-quarters of the Province.
14 The forests and preserves of the Panjéb are rich in trees. Deoddr
15 (Cedrus deodara) is grown in the higher Himalayan ranges of Hazdrd,
16 Chamba, Kali and Basahar; chél (P. longifolia and P. excelsa) in the
17 Siwdliks and other hill tracts of the Kdngra, Hoshiarpur, Gurdaéspir, and
18 Rawalpindi Districts; small sé) (Shorea robusta) at Kalesar in the Ambala
19 District; and kéhar (Acacia Arabica), gand (Prosopis spicigera), sal
20 (Salvadora Persica and S. oleides), phulai (Acacia modesta), karil
21 (Capparis aphylla), ber (Zizyphus jujuba) and dakh (Butea frondosa) in
22 the plain rakhs of the bér tracts of the Province.
23 The chief markets of the Panj&éb are Lahore, Amritsar, Multan and
24 Delhi, the indigenous manufactures being chiefly silk, carpets and wool.
25 Carpentry, ironmongery and the manufacture of arms have made good pro-
26 gress. No steam machinery has yet been introduced into the Panjéb and
27 the manufactures of the Province are all carried on by hand. The only
28 factories which the Panjdb can boast of are a woollen factory, a silk filature
29 and a sugar mill, but these are under European management and owned
30 by European traders.
31 Peshawar and Ludhiand produce cotton fabrics of considerable merit,
32 At Peshawar are manufactured fine checked luéngis, with gold or coloured
33 borders, which are worn as turbans by Musalmans living on the frontier.
34 Their habit in this respect has also been adopted by many respectable
35 Musalmans in the east of the Panjéb. Ludbidnd is noted for the variety of
36 its patkas (girdle cloths), léngis, kheses, a striped cloth called gambroon,
37 twills, jeans, checks of several kinds and thick white twilled choutdéhis.
38 Susi, a striped cotton fabric, used chiefly for women’s clothing, is
39 manufactured at Batdla. Jhang is noted for excellent cloths with large
40 dark blue and white checks, arid Delhi for its fine muslin. Ghati, a fine
41 glazed and close-woven white cloth is made at Rdahon, in the Jalandhar
42 District. Fine cotton pile carpets are made at Multdn and darts at
43 Ambdla, Amritsar is the centre of shawl weaving, though it does not
44 produce as fine work as Kdshmir. Kdngra and the Simla States produce
45 excellent checked and plain shawl blankets, often with fringes and coloured
46 borders, Fabrics of goat’s hair are also made, and patit, a kind of narrow
47 woollen furred cloth. Phulkdris, resembling crewel work, and consisting of
48 floss silk, floral or other patterns worked on dark grounds, are made at
49 Amritsar, Sidlkot, Hoshiarpir, Gujrdnwdla, Hazdrdé, Rohtak, Hissdr and
50 the .Waziri country. Wrappers with work of this description are worn
51 by women. Delhi, Léhore and Amritsar are famous for their gold and
52 coloured silk embroidered work.
53 Excellent’ wood work is made at Amritsar, Delhi, Bherd, Sidlkot,
54 Jhang, Simla, Hoshiarpur and Bhiwdni, which are also noted for carving
