2 THE EXPEDITION TO JUMMOO.
3 Thus for the time triumphant over the Dogras at Lahore,
4 Jewahir Sing and his adherents set themselves to the task of re-
5 ducing all those places which belonged to or were held for Heera
6 Sing and Goolaub Sing. For this purpose troops were sent
7 against Jesrowta, Samba, Ramnuggur, and other places, under
8 Lall Sing, Sham Sing Attareewallah, Futteh Sing Maun, and
9 Sultan Mahomed Khan. On the other side a force was sent by
10 Goolaub Sing from Jummoo under Meean Jewahir Sing, brother
11 of Heera Sing, to aid and defend Jesrowta. But on the approach
12 of the durbar troops, six horse artillery guns formerly belonging
13 to Rajah Dehan Sing, and then in charge of a Seik officer
14 named Uttur Sing, left Jesrowta and joined the Khalsa force.
15 Thence their commander took them quietly to Lahore, where
16 he was well received by Sirdar Jewahir Sing. In a few days
17 after many more troops deserted, so that at length Meean Jewahir
18 Sing had not strength to make any resistance. He accordingly,
19 with all the treasure and property he could carry away, evacuat-
20 ed Jesrowta and retreated to Jummoo, while the Lahore troops
21 took formal possession of the town which he had deserted, and
22 soon after occupied Samba and the whole line of country
23 along the base of the lower range of hills. And now the
24 durbar became so elated with its success that orders were
25 shortly sent from Lahore to march and take Jummoo itself.
