2 whom she referred. She then pointed out Dewan Jewahir
3 Mull, formerly dewan to Suchet Sing, who had actually
4 been in the plot, and had supplied all the money distributed
5 by Pirthee Sing. Jewahir Mull, who was then in the assem-
6 bly, was immediately disarmed and made a prisoner. Her
7 Hig-hness then intimated her wish that Pirthee Sing and others
8 of the Dogra party should be seized and given up to her,
9 but none of these were present, as they took care never to
10 move out of the lines of Court's division which protected
11 them. On hearing this demand, great murmuring and tumult
12 ensued among the Punches, which ended in the whole party
13 leaving the Summun Boorj and returning to the camp. Some
14 of the troops and their deputies were for taking the members
15 of the Dogra faction prisoners, and sending them to the
16 Ranee, while others were strongly opposed to this measure.
17 The French, or General Ventura's division, were most forward
18 in counselling the surrender of Pirthee Sing and his ad-
19 visers; and they, joining with several other battalions, planned
20 an attack on Court's division for the purpose of seizing the
21 obnoxious chiefs. On hearing of this, Court's battalions formed
22 square to protect themselves and the sirdars, whom they placed
23 in the centre. At this crisis word was brought that the
24 whole army was to be reviewed next morning by the young
25 Maharajh himself. During the ensuing night a numerous
26 assembly of the Punches was held, at which, it was resolved
27 that in order to prevent the Khalsa from hostile division and
28 suicidal slaughter, Pirthee Sing and his party should be secret-
29 ly conveyed out of the camp, when they could find their own
30 way safely to Jummoo. This matter being arranged, the
31 review came off as appointed, before the Maharajh and his
32 mother ; and while the royal cortege was leaving the ground
33 to return to the city, Pirthee Sing and his friends, attended
34 by a few horsemen, were allowed to quit the camp in another
