3 be expected, he sought his own advantage and that of his
4 family and faction much more than that of his client. The
5 conditions on which it was agreed that the fort of Lahore
6 should be given up and Chund Kour resign her claims to
7 the guddee, were, first, a jaghire of nine lakhs for the princess
8 — Kuddee Kuddeealee was the place named, adjoining the
9 Jummoo states — and Goolaub Sing was to have the manage-
10 ment of it for her ; — second, that as it was the Ranee's wish
11 to live as the faithful widow of Kurruck Sing, Shere Sing
12 should never make any pretensions to her hand ; — third, that
13 the Dogra garrison of the fort should be allowed to march
14 out unmolested and with flying colours ; — and fourth, that
15 security should be given for the due fulfilment of these
16 conditions.
17 In obtaining a jaghire of nine lakhs of rupees per
18 annum in the part of the country adjoining his own domi-
19 nions, under pretence of holding it for Chund Kour, the
20 chief of Jummoo secured an object of no small consideration
21 with him ; while by the lady being allowed to continue in
22 a state of widowhood he was secured in quiet possession of
23 the advantages thus obtained. Eventually, however, the Rajah
24 secured to himself not only this jaghire but almost all the
25 lady's money and valuables, which under the pretence of
26 safely keeping for her, he carried off to Jummoo.
27 Matters being satisfactorily arranged, it was settled that the
28 Dogra garrison should leave the fort on the evening of the
29 eighth day. In preparation for this movement, Goolaub
30 Sing emplo}red himself in filling his tumbrils and waggons,
31 sixteen in number, with silver money, allowing only thirty
32 rounds of ammunition for each gun, to be used is case of
33 emergency. Furthermore, a bag of gold mohurs was en-
34 trusted to the care of each of five hundred of his most
35 faithful adherents ; and again, a quantity of jewellery and valu-
36 able trinkets was delivered to the charge of his own orderly
