4are given below. It will be seen

5that the annual decrease of popula-

6tion per 10,000 since 1868 has been

725 for males, one for females and

814 for persons. Supposing the same

9rate of decrease to hold good for the

10next ten years, the population for

11each year would be, in hundreds, as

12shown in the margin.

13But it is very doubtful how

14far the decrease is real, as the

15figures of 1868 cannot be trusted.

16The decrease in urban population

17since 1868 has been much larger than that in rural population, the

18numbers living in 1881 for every 100 living in 1868 being 83 for

19urban, and 98 for total population. The populations of individual

20towns at the respective enumerations are shown under their res-

21pective headings in Chapter VI. Turning from the district as a whole

22to its component parts we have the following figures : —

124The figures here given for 1868 are taken from the ialml ab-

125stracts of that year. But if the population of the separate villages

126now included in each tahsil are taken from the registers still exist-

127ing in the district office and added together, we have th« following

128results for the population of 1868: — Kangra, 211,161 ; Nurpur,

129127,368 ; Debra, 133,535 ; Hamlrpur, 166,913 ; Kiiln with Lahaul

130and Spiti, 89,913; total, 728,890, or some 15,000 less than the

131published totals. As for the figures of 1850 and 3855, apart from the

132uncertainty already noticed, the changes in boundaries noticed at

133the end of Chapter II make any detailed comparison unprofitable.

134The population of Basi Bachertu, Shahpur, and Kandi, which were

135included in 1850 and 1855, is stated to have been 41,754 souls in

1361868. Assuming, for the purpose of comparison, that this number

137has remained constant throughout, we have for the total population of

138Kangra pfcoper the following figures : —

139In 1850 .. 542,673 I In 1868 .. 644.959
