3longer applicable ; but the mode in which

4he conducted his administration, and the

5increasing importance of passing events in

6that quarter, have suggested their publication.

7It is the misfortune of India, the conquest of

8which has been termed “the brightest jewel in

9the English crown,” that it should be so little

10known by the distant nation which governs

11its millions of fellow-subjects. I hope, for the

12sake of my country, that their interests may

13hereafter be better understood, and more truly

14estimated. After giving these personal de-

15tails, I can only express a hope that my imper-

16fections will be pardoned; and that, having

17long wished to visit England, I may venture

18to offer the humble tribute of my pen as a

19passport to the indulgence of the English,

20should I ever be permitted to visit their great

21country ; and as a token of gratitude to those

22who have enabled me to write in their lan-

23guage, and assisted me through life by their

24countenance and favour.
