3municipality, and during the succeeding ten years 1882-91, 61G

4deaths from this cause were recorded. The cholera deaths

5reported in the rest of the district duriDg these two decenuia

6were respectively 3,210 and 3,869.

7The average registered death-rate from small-pox during the

820 years 1872-91 was Id 8 per 1,000, the corresponding rate for

9the province as a whole having been 0'86 per 1,000. Previous

10to 1881 there was a provincial vaccination staff which visited

11each district every three or four years. In the cold weather

12of 1881 a separate vaccination establishment was allotted to

13each district, so that vaccinators now visit the whole or the

14greater part of the district annually. That the work of vacci-

15nation is more efficiently carried out by the district vaccination

16staff than it was by provincial vaccinators, is proved by the fact

17that during the 10 years 1872-81 when provincial vaccinators

18were at work 13,190 small-pox deaths were reported in the

19district, and during the following ten years 1882-91 when the

20work was done by the district vaccinators, only 6,193 deaths

21from that cause were registered. The attitude of the people of

22the rural portions of the Lahore district towards vaccination

23is most favourable, the work is done quietly and efficiently and

24with little or no friction. It is different in the city of Lahore.

25The city people to a considerable extent appreciate the benefits

26of vaccination and most of them have little objection to have

27their children vaccinated, hut what they do object to, Hindus

28particularly, is the transfer of lymph from their children to

29others. This objection has recently been obviated by the introduc-

30tion of animal lymph vaccination. Statistics, however, show

31that the percentage of children vaccinated continues to he less

32in the city than it is in the rural tracts of the district, and the

33Municipal Committee have therefore resolved to apply to

34Government for the extension of the provisions of the Vacci-

35nation Act, XIII of 1880, to the Municipality of Lahore.

36The most sickly months of the year in this district are

37September, October and November : the months in which the

38largest number of deaths occur on an average are October

39November and December. The smallest number of deaths are

40i - egistered in the months of April, March, February aud July.

41The system of registering births in the district came into

42force in 1880. There was an average birth-rate of 43 per 1,000

43in the district as a whole for the year 1880-91 . In the city

44although bye-laws for the compulsory registration of births

45are in force, the birth-rate is considerably below that of the

46district. Means have lately been taken for ensuring more

47accurate registration of vital statistics in the municipality.

48SECTON B— GEOLOGY, FAUNA AND FLORA.

49Our knowledge of Indian geology is as yet so general in its

50nature, and so little has been done in the Punjab in the way of

51detailed geological investigation, that it is impossible to discuBS
