1PREFACE.

2In the lists of Officers serving in In<lia, which are contained in pages

35 to 1 19 of this volume, only substantive appointments are, as a rule, shown : and,

4except in the case of members of tbe Indian Civil Service, the names of Officers

5drawing substantive pay of less than Rs. 500 a month are not included. The

6names shown in italics are those of Officers who are in foreign service, super-

7numerary, seconded, or employed outside their own departments.

8To meet the difficulty that arises from the lack of uniformity in India in the

9use of surnames, Indian names are in doubtful cases twice .indexed, and cross

10references are made in the Record of Services. Rulers of States are shown

11under the names of their States.

12The principle of selection followed in the Record of Services (pages 513 to

13^35) explained on page5ii.

14The “ Index of Subjects and Appointments” is on pages iv to xviii, and the

15“Index of Names” on pages 844 to 905. Names in the Honours Lists and

16Record of Services are shown in the Index of Names by and “ 33 ,” with a

17note prefixed referring to the Alphabetical Lists on pages 197 to 227 and pages

18513 to 835.

19It is requested that intimations of errors in the lists, or of omissions, may

20be addressed to the Editor of the India Office List, India Office, Whitehall,
