7 Elph. Acc. of PANJKORA, a district north-east of Afghanistan, on the
8 Caubul, 334;
9 Seur As.Soz, gouthern slope of Hindoo Koosh, and lying about the upper
10 ents secs haa branches of the Lundye river. Hence its name, which signifies
11 of Alexander on five rivers, that being the number of the principal streams. It
12 RE ee has Chitral to the north; to the east are several small inde-
13 Indus. pendent states, little known, but which extend north of the
14 Indus to Bolor; to the south-east is Suwat; to the south,
15 Afghanistan ; to the west, Kafiristan. It has been overrun by
16 the Yusuf Zais Afghans, who, having reduced the primitive
17 inhabitants to a state of vassalage, maintain themselves in a tur-
18 bulent independence. It is in general a maze of mountains
19 densely wooded, except in the neighbourhood of the rivers, where
20 cultivation is carefully attended to. The limits of Panjkora are
21 ill defined, but the length cannot exceed eighty miles, and the
22 breadth is about thirty. Panjkora, the principal place, is laid
23 down in lat. 35° 25’, long. 72°.

35 left bank of the main channel, in lat. 30° 5’, long. 70° 59’.
36 Hough, Narr.Exp. | PAREEWALLAH, in the Punjab, a small town ten miles
37 Bee from the right or west bank of the Chenaub. The surrounding
38 country is regarded as peculiarly favourable to the constitution of
39 the horse, and on this account the Sikh government has an ex-
