the arrangement of the rock, and consist of crystallized masses
of a reddish tinge and of great brilliancy, which are sepa-
rated from each other by thin layers of clay. The deposit is
worked to great extent, the opening visited by Burnes being a gal-
lery, a thousand feet long, leading into a chamber a hundred fect
in height, excavated entirely in salt. The air was found to be very
dry, and the temperature about twenty degrees higher than with-
out. The salt is not very pure, and hence is unfit for curing
meat. It is, moreover, considered unwholesome, in consequence,
according to Burnes, of an admixture of magnesia. It sells at
the mouth of the mine for nearly 52. per ton, or about twenty
times the price charged in England. The trade, as is usual in
the East, is in the hands of the government, which realized a
profit of above 1,000 per cent., and calculated, in the time of
Burnes’ visit, on obtaining from it an aggregate revenue of
about 160,000. per annum. The quantity raised annually is
about 40,000 tons, but might be increased indefinitely, as the
mines appear to be inexhaustible. The workings are conducted
in the rudest manner, the salt being brought to the surface by
unaided human labour, and in this way a man, his wife, and child
may earn a rupee a day. The employment is both laborious
and unhealthy in a very high degree. Pind Dadun Khan is the
great mart for the produce of these mines, the salt being sent
through it to be embarked on the Jailum. Population, 6,000.
