3 most western point is the confluence of the Punjnud and Indus;
4 the most eastern is about the 78th meridian. The length from
5 north-east to south-west, from Nobra in Ladakh to the confluence
6 of the Indus and Punjnud, is about six hundred miles ; the breadth,
7 measured at right angles to this from the Sutlej near Rampur, to
8 the Indus at Derbend, about three hundred and fifty ; the super-
9 ficial extent, one hundred and twenty-five thousand square miles. *
10 The outline of the extreme territory is almost completely formed .
11 by the course of the Indus and that of the Sutlej and its prolon-
12 gation: the included region is watered or drained by those two
13 great rivers or their feeders, and by the Beas, Ravee, Chenaub,
14 Jailum, and a few others of less magnitude. The country
15 thus marked out is bounded on the north by Bolor, or the un-
16 explored mountain waste, lying between Yarkund and the Kouen-
17 lun range, and by Great Tibet; on the east, by Great Tibet and
18 the hill provinces of British India; on the south-east and south,
