6 and Patans, the descendants of former Afghan conquerors, are - Sadie

8 Moguls. The rest of the population is of Hindoo descent, though abe ee
9 probably the majority have become converts to Mahometanism. the Spiti Valley.

15 from the Rajpoot tribe of Jats.* The only authority worth notice
16 in regard to the amount of the population is Burnes, whose
17 statement, however, is neither very explicit, nor invested with
18 much pretension to accuracy. “‘It is with distrust,” he says,
19 “that I attempt an enumeration of the people subject to the
20 Punjab, but Iam informed that the Khalsa, or Sikh population,
21 does not exceed 500,000 souls, and the remainder is composed of
22 Sikhs, Mahometans, and Hindoo Juts, who may amount to
23 3,000,000.” From various data, though far from satisfactory, an
24 approximate computation may be made of the total population
25 of the Sikh empire.
