8 containing the tomb of a reputed saint. It is situate in a narrow
9 valley embosomed in the Hubb mountains, and watered by a
10 small stream flowing from a fine spring which never fails. The
11 soil may be considered fertile as compared with the adjacent
12 barren hills: it produces vines, mango, orange, and tamarind
13 trees, besides a number of large and fine babool trees (mimosas).
14 Here is a mosque, with a cemetery attached ta.it, and the Be-
15 looches believe that peculiar blessings attend the souls of those

17 SHAH BUNDER, in Sinde, in the delta of the Indus, a Burnes, Rep. on
18 small place on the east bank of the channel, which discharges its Tae . sia
19 water into the sea by the Mull mouth. MHither the English
20 factory was removed from Aurungabunder or Dehrajamka, in
21 consequence of this latter place being deserted by the water of the
22 Indus. Previously to the dissolution of the factory here in 1775,
23 its establishment for navigating the Indus consisted of fourteen
24 small vessels, each of about forty tons burthen. Subsequently,
25 this place also was deserted by the stream, and, on the re-
26 establishment of the factory in 1799, Lahoreebunder, thirty-five
27 miles north-west, on the Buggaur, or western branch of the
28 Indus, was selected as its site. Shah Bunderis in lat. 24° 10’,

32 nacularly termed, a /ora, which rises at Sir-i-Aub, ten miles south rice
33 of Quetta, or Shawl, and flows northwards about forty miles to
34 Kyderzye Khail, thence westward twelve miles to Shahdazye,
35 and four miles below that place joins the Pisheen lora. ‘The
36 united streams flow on past Shorawuck, a hundred and twenty
37 miles, into an abistada, or lake, about eight miles in circum-
38 ference, which nearly disappears in the dry season.
39 Shahdazye is inhabited by Saiyads, or Mahometans, claiming
40 to be descended from the prophet. The Shahdazye Saiyads are one
41 of the three great septs of these claimants of sanctity, who inhabit
