Belah. ‘It is the first inhabited spot on the road northwards from
Sonmeanee, the intervening country being one continued salt
marsh. “There are about sixty houses, amongst which are a few
shops kept by Hindoos. Lat. 25° 33’, long. 66° 33’.
SHAKAPORE, in Sinde, a town on the great route from
Cutch to Hyderabad. About a mile north-east of the town are
the ruins of a large city, built of excellent burnt brick, and still
in such a state of preservation that the walls and bastions are
plainly discernible. To the north-east of these ruins is the large
bed of a great branch of the Indus, now completely devoid of
water. Shakapore has, at this time, no pretensions to import-
ance either in point of wealth or population. Lat. 24° 34’, long.
68° 26’.
SHAKHUR, or SHENKHUR, in the Punjab, a village on
the route from Baramula to Mazufurabad, and ten miles west of
the former town. It is situate on the right bank of the Jailum,
where it holds a rapid course down the southern slope of the
Pir Panjal. Lat. 34° 10’, long. 74° 1’.
SHAKR DARA, in Afghanistan, a handsome village and col-
lection of delightful gardens in a valley on the east side of the
Pughman range of mountains, and distant twelve miles north-west
of the city of Kabool. Lat. 34° 40’, long. 68° 45’.
SHALKOT, in the Punjab, a fort and village on the route
from Lahore to Rihursi, and sixty miles north-east of the former
town. Lat. 32° 23’, long. 74° 33’.
SHARGULLEE, in Afghanistan, a village and halting-
place on the route from Ghuznee to Shawl, and sixty miles
north of the latter place. The surrounding country is rough,
barren, and nearly impracticable for a military force or other
large body of persons, from the difficulty of the routes and the
scantiness of supplies. Lat.,30° 49’, Jong. 67° 19’.
SHARKEE,! in Afghanistan, a village on the right bank
of the Indus, thirty miles above Kala Bagh. It is situate?
at the southern base of the rocky range, which, rising south of
Attock, is traversed by the Indus in a deep and narrow channel.
Below Sharkee the channel expands, the declivity decreases, and
the stream becomes smoother and less violent. Above, during
the season of inundation, the upward navigation of the Indus is
utterly impracticable. Lat. 33° 13’, long. 71° 46’.
