centre is a morass which appears to have been once a lake; the
sides are verdant, and overgrown in many places with jungle. . It
seems to be a sort of Nephelococeygia, or metropolis for the birds
of Kashmir, which every evening congregate here in vast num-
bers. Ravens, crows, and jackdaws appear in great flocks in the
air above the tops of the enclosing mountain, and all moving
towards Lolab. As soon as they are sufficiently near their rest-
ing place, they dart down with surprising rapidity, and alight in
such countless numbers as literally to blacken the ground.
Lolab valley is drained by a small river of the same name, which,
rising in the expansion just mentioned, holds a circuitous course,
first in a westerly, and then in a south-easterly direction, and at
the distance of about thirty-five miles from its source falls into
the Jailum, in lat. 34° 13’, long. 74°17’. The singular place of
concourse for birds is in lat. 33° 34’, long. 74° 52’.
LOLUM, or more properly Lolur, in Kashmir, a village
thirty-two miles north of the town of Sirinagur. Lat. 34° 26’,
_ long. 74° 24’.
LOODHUN, in the Punjab, a village situate on a watercourse
connected with the river Ghara, from the right bank of which it
is distant about four miles, and sixty miles south-east of Mooltan.
Lat. 29° 51’, long. 72° 27’.
LOONEE, in Afghanistan, a village on the route from
Ghuznee to Dera Ismael Khan, about thirty-five miles west of
the latter town. It is situate on the Gomul river. Lat, 31° 54’,
long. 70° 20’.
LORA, a river of Southern Afghanistan, rises about fifty
miles north-east of Quetta, or Shawl, in lat. 30° 49’, long. 67°
20’, and, after flowing south-west for a distance of about eighty
miles, is lost in the sands of the desert of Khorasan. Its water
is briny. The Rogani Pass, from Sewestan to Shorawuck, winds
along its course. It is crossed, five miles north of Hykulzie, by
the route from Shawl to Kandahar, and has there a channel be-
tween forty and fifty feet deep, In April, the water was found
to be only seven or eight yards wide and two fect deep. The
name is generic, signifying “river,” in the language of the
natives.
LORA, in Afghanistan, on the route from Ghuznee to Ka-
bool, and nineteen miles north-east of the former place, is a dis-
trict containing some walled villages, and abounding in streams,
