4 and for which it is proverbial. The adjacent country avatered by
5 the inundations of the Chenaub, produces fruits, esculent vege-
6 tables, grain, and other crops, in great abundance and perfec-
7 tion. Mooltan is said by Burnes? to be to this day styled ° ili. 114.
8 “*Mallithan,” which he translates the place of the Maili, and
9 thence infers it to have been that capital of the Malli taken
10 by Alexander. But Arrian! mentions several such cities, and ! Arrian, vi.8.
11 his brevity and the slender acquaintance which he had of the lo-
12 calities, must render any decision on such points at the present
13 day hazardous and uncertain. Mooltan was taken by the
14 Mahometans, under Mahomed Ben Kasim, at the close of the
15 eighth century; by Mahmood of Ghiznee at the commencement
16 of the eleventh; by Tamerlane at the close of the fourteenth.?’ eins
