7 NURPUR,! in the north-east of the Punjab, among the lower | p, von Hugel,

9 siderable importance, as being on the route from Hindostan to Beng. and Eng.
10 Kashmir. It contains a good and well-stocked bazaar, and has *
11 6,000 or 8,000 inhabitants,* a large portion of whom are Kash-
12 mirians, employed in shawl weaving. There is a fort built of
13 stones and mud on an eminence about two hundred feet high, at
14 the base of which flows a small river, a feeder of the Ravee,
15 which it joins about thirty miles lower down. It is commanded
16 on every side by higher eminences. Nurpur is now held by the
17 Sikh government, which has expelled the hereditary raja. Eleva- — grees eee
